It’s easy and your voice counts more than you think. Big money can finance a candidate’s campaign, but big money can’t walk into a precinct and vote in your place (unless your district uses electronic voting machines—but that’s another story).
Your Congresspeople really do care about phone calls because phone calls represent votes. So, if you’ve never called Congress, give it a try. And tell your friends to call, too. It’s a local action with a global impact.

When the switchboard operator answers:
I’d like Senator/Representative ______________________’s office, please.
When the staff member comes on the line:
I am one of Senator/Representative ______________________’s constituents and I have a comment for the Senator/Congressman/Congresswoman.
1) I would like to urge her/him to vote yes/no on the upcoming legislation regarding ___________________. [Give a brief reason for your opinion of the legislation. If you can cite a bill number, that will help your representative identify the bill.]
2) I would like to thank the Senator/Congressman/Congresswoman for her/his vote on ___________________. [Give a brief reason for your opinion of the legislation. If you can cite a bill number, that will help your representative identify the bill.]
3) I’m calling to express my disappointment in the Senator’s/Congressman’s/Congresswoman’s vote on ___________________. [Give a brief reason for your opinion of the legislation. If you can cite a bill number, that will help your representative identify the bill.]
4) I’m calling to express my concern about ___________________. [Give brief details about the issue, how it affects you, and the solution you would like to see. It is appropriate to call about any issue concerning national policy, your state, or your community.]
That’s all you need to do. Keep the call short unless the staff member asks you for information—they have a lot of calls to take.
