“Loony left” continues to be an effective slur against anyone who speaks reason in opposition to the corporate agenda. The press, however, is supposed to stand up to name calling, stand up to being unpopular, stand up to intimidation. Because it has the most important responsibility of our democracy—informing the people about whether the officials elected to manage our government are doing their jobs ethically, efficiently, and in accordance with the people’s agenda.
That’s the easy observation.
A more important observation at this point is that the internet is turning things around. The mere fact that this clip was picked up and publicized to such an extent that MSNBC could not ignore it—Chris Matthews also aired a segment on McCain’s statement—shows that the netroots can push the public discourse. We saw a shameful example of this with Mayhill Fowler and her report on Obama’s “bitter” remark. Here is a more uplifting example of net awareness leading to mainstream coverage.
